Business delegation from Akron (Ohio, USA) visiting Slovenia

In June 2012, PoliMaT Center of Excellence (CE PoliMaT) visited Akron (Ohio, USA), the world center of polymers. In cooperation with the Slovenian-American Business Association (SABA) and key partners, and with the support of Slovenian diplomacy, it devised research and development cooperation in the area of (bio)polymers and support for the start-up companies of CE PoliMaT. Due to its considerable interest in the cooperation with CE PoliMaT and its industrial partners, a delegation from Akron is visiting Slovenia between September 17 and 21, 2012.

The key objective of the delegation's intensive visit to Slovenia is to strengthen cooperation in the areas of science, education and business opportunities and lay the foundations for the planned activities. In November 2012, CE PoliMaT will open an office in the Akron Global Business Accelerator. It will enable closer and more intensive cooperation in the field of research and development programs, technology transfer and the possibility of testing the US market for both the existing partners and the start-up companies.

CE PoliMaT took some important steps in 2012 in the area of integration into the international knowledge networks in Europe, the USA, Asia and Africa. What follows is the most important step – the transfer of knowledge into globally successful products. This will only be possible through a joint approach and close cooperation between the areas of science, the economy and business diplomacy which will create solid foundations for the future-oriented research and development cooperation and the possibility of Slovenian know-how and products penetrating international markets. With its strong industrial environment and competencies gained in the business accelerator and the university, its investors and support research institutions, Akron is focused on the development of (bio)polymers, which is also the central activity of CE PoliMaT. The Slovenian scientific diaspora is very strong in Ohio, which makes it easier for CE PoliMaT to enter the US market through Akron.

In addition to the head of the delegation, Dr. Anthony Margida, Director of Entrepreneurial Services at the Global Business Accelerator, the following prominent guests are also members of the delegation: Donald L. Plusquellic, Mayor of the City of Akron, Robert Bowman, Deputy Mayor of the City of Akron, in charge of the city's economic development, Stephen Kidder, Advisor to the Mayor and investor and Garry Moneypenny, Member of the Akron City Council. While visiting Slovenia, the delegation and CE PoliMaT will also meet with Dr. Žiga Turk, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Radovan Stanislav Pejovnik, Rector of the University of Ljubljana, Zoran Janković, the Mayor of the City of Ljubljana, Iztok Lesjak, MSc, Director of the Ljubljana Technology Park, Mateja Mešl, MSc, Director of the Public Agency for Technology of the Republic of Slovenia, Joseph Mussomeli, the US Ambassador to Slovenia, and representatives of the founders, industry partners of CE PoliMaT and US companies in Slovenia.
